And the sports world surprises us again

I don't care how talented, how big an international celebrity, or how good-looking you are, NO ONE should be paid $50 million/year to kick a ball around and do commercial endorsements. The David Beckham contract with the LA Galaxy (five years, $250 million) surpasses every other seemingly ridiculous deal in the sports realm. Thought the Islanders were crazy for signing Rick DiPietro for 15 years? Couldn't believe it when the Rangers forked over $252 million for A-Rod? Well, this is worse. Beckham will be making 500 times more per week than most of his teammates.

I do recognize how good this could be for Major League Soccer, one of the more low-profile professional sports leagues in the US. MLS could definitely use a recognizable international athlete to bring them some exposure and credibility. However, as Chickball reader Manton pointed out, the guy isn't that great. He had some good years with Manchester United, but after making the jump to Real Madrid four years ago, he has scored just seven goals in 63 games. Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said Beckham is coming to LA at the peak of his career. Yeah. Okay, Frank.

So, Beckham becomes the latest athlete to claim he wants to "make a difference," because accepting the Galaxy's offer had nothing to do with the money. Well, then. I'm sure he and Victoria will find the fake Hollywood atmosphere much to their taste.

Although most of the $250 million isn't being footed directly by MLS, I still definitely agree with you. Insane.

MLS definitely isn't footing the entire bill as anon said above. Some points as the resident soccerhead around here (LiverpooFC!)
-This will not help MLS in terms of quality. It might bring in more older stars a la Pele in the 70s, but the focus has to be cultivating more home-grown talent (like Clint Dempsey, who scored the only legit goal for the US side this WC, just transfered to Fulham in Premiership for 4 million, the most ever out of the MLS).
-This will help bring attention. Once there, it's up for the play to carry it over, cause simply having pics in US Weekly won't go after the sports fan, who the MLS needs to win over.
-Beckham has never been a great player at any time in his career. He is outstanding on set plays and free kicks, puts up the best cross in the world, and had great stamina. Those days are not now. He only cracked 5 games in the starting line up in Real Madrid this year. That's not good. He was getting interest in England from mid-table Premiership teams for much less money for 1 or 2 years at max. Remember that.
-Best little issue: LA Galaxy is the home of pussyfag Landon Donovan, a man who is rather emotionally fragile. He came back from playing in germany cause the food was "weird," and didn't think sacrificing comfortability for imporvement in his sport was worth it (let alone letting down the US in this World Cup, the fucking douche). Seeing him whine and moan shall be fantastic.

Sorry, that was a lot of words.
